The best beer gardens
If Munich is synonymous with anything, it has to be its beer garden culture. We love to get together, find a shady spot at a long table, and enjoy the rest of the day with a cold beverage in hand. Here, we’ve put together a list of our favourite places to do exactly that.
Augustiner-Keller
This is Munich's oldest beer garden, and we think it's one of the nicest, as well. It's located right between the Downtown and Bayer 89 Vi Vadi Hotels, which easily puts it within walking distance. At Augustiner-Keller, you can enjoy delicious Bavarian specialities and cold beer in the shade of more than a hundred chestnut trees. The beer on draught is – what else? – Augustiner-Bräu, and there’s also a great playground for the little ones.
Wirtshaus am Bavariapark
You’ll find this idyllic beer garden near Theresienwiese, just northwest of the statue of Bavaria at the Alte Kongresshalle. A leisurely stroll from the Bayer 89 Vi Vadi will get you there in around 15 minutes. If you’re still up for some culture after a light dinner and a stein of Augustiner, the Deutsches Museum has several buildings dedicated to historic automobiles, buses, and train cars just a few steps away.
Viktualienmarkt
The beer garden at Munich's famous Viktualienmarkt lies in the city's historic centre, which makes it the perfect place to take a relaxing break from all that shopping and sightseeing. One thing that makes this beer garden special is the fact that it serves beer from more than one brewery. Over a period of around six weeks, it cycles through Hofbräu, Spaten, Augustiner, Hacker Pschorr, Paulaner, and Löwenbräu.
Chinesischer Turm
Look up “beer garden” in the dictionary and you’ll probably find a picture of this one. Meanwhile, the Chinese Tower (Chinesischer Turm) itself is the stuff of postcards and recognised all over the world. Amidst the lush green of the English Garden, you’ll likely agree that the Ochsensemmel and Hofbräu beer taste even better. From La Mansion Vi Vadi, you can take a delightful stroll through the park that will bring you to the Chinese Tower in around 20 minutes. The beer garden also treats its guests to fantastic live music in the traditional Bavarian style four days a week.
Osterwaldgarten
Right – this one is a proper insider tip. Osterwaldgarten is a small, but highly recommendable spot that serves up traditional Bavarian fare and fresh mugs of Spaten and Franziskaner. It's located right at the entrance to the English Garden just five minutes from La Mansion Vi Vadi, which makes it a great place to fuel up before or after a walk through the expansive park.
Seehaus
You’d be hard-pressed to find a fancier beer garden than the English Garden’s Seehaus. Here on the banks of the Kleinhesseloher See, you can observe the ducks, geese, and swans as you enjoy a tall, cold Paulaner and leave the hustle-and-bustle of the city behind. If you find yourself feeling a bit peckish, we can’t recommend the Steckerlfisch (that's grilled mackerel on a stick) highly enough. Coming from La Mansion Vi Vadi, you can get here on foot in less than 10 minutes.
Hirschgarten
The Hirschgarten is Munich's biggest beer garden, which, by its own reckoning, makes it the largest in the entire world. When the weather cooperates, it can serve more than 8,000 guests on a given day. It's not just its size that makes the Hirschgarten special, either; a game reserve directly adjacent to the garden gives visitors the chance to see fallow and red deer up close. There are also several playgrounds and a skate park nearby.
